Stephen Goodfellow was born in Bromley, London, on 22 July 1844. After serving two years in the Merchant Service he was entered as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. VESUVIUS on 17 October 1861, where he was advanced to Ord in August 1863, prior to being paid off during November 1864. In his next vessel, H.M.S. SCOUT (1864-69) he received advancement to A.B. in November 1865, to Leading Seaman in May 1867 and to Captain of the Mizzen Top in July 1867. Subsequently served aboard ZEALOUS (1869-73), where he was advanced to Acting Chief Bosun's Mate (C.P.O.) and was confirmed in this rank in August 1872. Whilst aboard H.M.S. DUNCAN he was promoted on 22 July 1873 to Acting Boatswain 2nd Class R.N. He was Boatswain of H.M.S. BOXER during an expedition up the River Niger during 1877. He earned his Egypt Campaign medal whilst serving aboard H.M.S. TOURMALINE (1880-84). Served two commissions aboard H.M.S. PEMBROKE (1884-87 and 1889-94), and whilst aboard H.M.S. ROYAL ARTHUR received promotion to Chief Boatswain R.N. on 1st November 1895. Was given the appointment of Master Rigger at Chatham Dockyard from September 1896 until pensioned and retired as an Honorary Lieutenant R.N. on 22 July 1899.
