Daniel Brazier was born in Haffan, Kent on 20 May 1844. First entered the service as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. ARROGANT on 14 May 1859, subsequently serving aboard H.M. Ships DAUNTLESS and VICTORY before being rated an ‘Ord’ and drafted to HARRIER in December 1860, where later in December he was made an A.B. and then a Leading Seaman in February 1864 before being "paid off ' in March 1865. Served aboard H.M.S. ENDYMION (1866-69) as 2nd Captain Fore Top rising to Captain of Fore Top, and IMMORTALITE from December 1870 until promoted to Warrant Rank as a Acting Boatswain R.N. on 24 July 1871, and was then sent to H.M.S. ROYAL OAK in Reserve. Subsequently serving aboard H.M. Ships HIMALAYA (1872-74), DEVASTATION (1874-77) and ASIA where he was Court Martialled and sentenced to be dismissed his ship and lose two years seniority on 7 August 1879. At his second Court Martial held on 16 July 1881, whilst he was serving aboard H.M.S. CLEOPATRA, he was sentenced to be dismissed from Her Majesty's service.
