Alfred Williams was born in St. Dominick, New York on 14 November 1853. Joined the service as a Domestic 3rd Class aboard H.M.S. DECOY on 8 November 1872, being advanced to Domestic 2nd Class one year later. Served as a Domestic 1st Class aboard H.M.S. SIRIUS (1876-80). Discharged to shore from H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON on 11 May 1884.
