George Congdon was born in Plympton, Devon on 15 November 1847. Joined the service as an Ordinary Seaman 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. CANOPUS on 10 December 1866. Advanced to A.B. in March 1870, serving aboard H.M.S . AMETHYST from July 1873 until 22 February 1874. He was disrated from Leading Seaman to A.B. in December 1877 whilst aboard H.M.S. CHARYBDIS (1877-80), suffering similar treatment in January 1884 whilst serving in H.M.S. CYGNET during the period January to April 1884. Pensioned as a Leading Seaman aboard H.M.S. ROYAL ADELAIDE in February 1887, but re-employed as an A.B. (Pensioner) aboard the gunnery training vessel H.M.S. CAMBRIDGE for eight years until final discharge in September 1895.
