The Honourable Henry Aylmer joined the Royal Marine Artillery as 2nd Lieutenant on 23 December 1859. He served on the Canadian Lakes as 1st Lieutenant aboard the Flag Ship H.M.S. DUNCAN, which ship he had joined in November 1864. He retired from the Navy in February 1869 and transferred to the Canadian Infantry two months later as a Captain in the 54th Battalion (Richmond), being promoted Major in the Canadian Artillery on 9 November 1877.

Only 3 officers and 21 N.C.O.’s and men of the Royal Marines received the Canada General Service Medal. Lieutenant Aylmer was the only Royal Marine Artillery officer.
