Born in Stonehouse, Devon, on 11 November 1842. Joined the service as a Ship's Steward's Boy on 1 March 1858 aboard H.M.S. EURYALUS, and had his rate changed to "Lamp Trimmer" in November 1860 and was sent ashore a fortnight later. Rejoined the service aboard EMERALD as a Lamp Trimmer on 7 January 1861, and was made a Ship's Steward's Assistant in November 1861, and since he was not a C.S. man, was sent ashore on 7 November 1863.

Rejoined the Navy aboard PRINCE CONSORT on 18 January 1864 as Ship's Steward's Assistant, until drafted to CHERUB as a Ship's Steward 3rd Class on 6 April 1866 until 25 January 1870. Next served aboard H.M.S. HELICON as Ship's Steward 2nd Class until 13 November 1873, PALLAS (1873-75), WOLVERINE (1876-80) where he was advanced to Ship's Steward 1st Class on 28 November 1876, and invalided to shore from H.M.S. INDUS on 8 December 1882.
