H.M. Ships RATTLER, HERMES and HASTINGS were in action against the stockades at Rangoon on 11 April 1852. Three seamen aboard RATTLER died on 15/16 April and were buried ashore. John Boyland was one of the deceased, having possibly died from wounds received a few days earlier. His medal was sent to his widow on 3 April 1856.
