John Wotton was born in Plymouth and joined CASTOR as a Clerk (unpassed) at the age of 19 years on 4 May 1849, transferring to DEE in December 1850 and two months later became Clerk aboard RHADAMANTHUS. Passing his examination for Paymaster in July 1851, he rose respectively to Assistant Paymaster and then Paymaster in April 1855 and June 1859. He served at Sebastopol as Passed Clerk and Assistant Paymaster aboard H.M.S. QUEEN and died whilst serving as Paymaster aboard H.M.S. MEDEA on 25 May 1864.
