The Birmingham Special Constabulary long service medal was instituted by the Watch Committee in 1916 as a reward for service during the Great War. The medal was discontinued in 1919 after the introduction of the Special Constabulary Faithful Service Medal. The Water Guards medal was instituted by the Watch Committee in 1917, to be awarded to those members of the Special Constabulary who took part in guarding the City's water supplies in the Elan Valley in Wales, during the Great War. It was also awarded to the men stationed at Bewdley, Worcestershire, where the pipeline surfaces to cross the river Severn.
