D.C.M., London Gazette, 1st May, 1918, 11940 Pte. (A/Cpl.) J. Holmes (Dawley, Salop): ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. A hostile machine gun was delaying the advance of the company and causing many casualties. This N.C.O. collected a few men and rushed the gun, bayonetting some and capturing the remainder of his post, an act which materially helped his company's further advance.’

Awarded for bravery during the operations round Cambrai between November 20th and December 2nd, 1917.
