Joseph Knight was born in Newbury, Berkshire. A Painter by occupation, he attested for the Royal Artillery at Reading on 17 July 1872, aged 19 years, 1 month. Served in India, December 1880-February 1885. Promoted to Battery Sergeant-Major in September 1888 and served as Acting Sergeant-Major from March 1893. Awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. in January 1891 - this was his only medallic award. Discharged 24 June 1897. With copied service papers.
