James C. Upstall was born in Elson, Alverstoke, Hampshire on 9 December 1850. A Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 9 December 1868. Transferred to the Coast Guard in September 1879. Appointed a Commissioned Boatman in January 1885. With copied service papers.
Frederick John Upstall, son of the above, was born in Wadebridge, Cornwall on 7 May 1893. Employed as a Labourer in a Tobacco Factory, he entered the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class in August 1913. Promoted to Stoker 1st Class in August 1914 when on H.M.S. Leander. Serving on the fleet repair ship H.M.S. Sandhurst, he died from burns suffered in an accident in the engine room on 27 February 1917. With copied service paper and other research including a copied photograph of H.M.S. Sandhurst.
