Alexander Cosgrove was born in Aberdeen. A Druggist by occupation, he attested for the 72nd Highlanders at Aberdeen on 21 April 1866, aged 18 years, enlisting for a bounty of £1. With the 72nd/Seaforth Highlanders he served in India, February 1871-August 1882; Egypt, August-November 1882 and India, February 1883-September 1885 - seeing action in the Afghan War 1878-80 and Egypt War 1882. Several times promoted and then reduced for misdemeanours. He was discharged in July 1887 having completed his second period of service. With copied service papers.
