Private Alfred W. Isaacs, 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 11 August 1914. Served in the 19th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Corps. On 23 August 1914 the regiment was on the British left along the Scheldt Canal at Conde. During Le Cateau it was at Reumont where it served as Smith-Dorrien’s sole reserve. Used to cover the retirement of the 13th and 14th Brigades. Relieved the R.H.A. at Nery in September 1914. With cap badge and copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
