Bernard William McGovern was born and lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire and enlisted at Halifax. Serving with the 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914. Served in the 13th Infantry Brigade, 5th Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. At Mons the regiment was hit hard by the Germans at Paturages. Covered the withdrawal of the 13th and 14th Brigades at Wasmes and suffered over 400 casualties. On 11 November 1914 the regiment defended Nonne Boschen, near Veldhoek. McGovern was killed by shelling north of Carnoy on 8 September 1915, aged 20 years. He was buried in the Carnoy Military Cemetery. He was the son of Patrick and Catherine McGovern, of Bradford.
