John Evans was born in Stratford, London. He attested for short service with the Imperial Yeomanry at Welshpool on 9 January 1900. He was posted to the 49th (Montgomeryshire) Company, 9th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry and served in South Africa, from March 1900. He was granted the temporary rank of Lieutenant in the Army on 29 April 1901. He relinquished his commission and was granted the honorary rank of Lieutenant in the Army on 28 September 1902.
