Charles Salmon was born near Chudleigh, Devon. A Gardener by occupation and a member of the 1st Volunteer Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, he attested for short service at Reading on 1 February 1900, aged 20 years, 9 months. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, he served in South Africa, March 1900-June 1901. He was discharged on completing his service on 16 June 1901. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
