John Bartlam was born in Walsall, Staffordshire. A Groom by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment, he attested for regular service at Walsall on 30 May 1891, aged 20 years. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1899 but recalled in December 1899 for service in South Africa. Discharged on 29 May 1904. With copied service papers and roll extract; with a copied photograph of the recipient in later life.
