Waterloo 1815 (John Smyth, 1st Batt. 95th Reg. Foot) fitted with contemporary replacement straight bar swivel suspension, edge bruising and overall contact wear, therefore good fine £2000-2500

John Smyth was born in the Parish of Friars, near Edinburgh, and joined the 1/95th Regiment in 1800, having five years previous service in a fencible regiment. He was discharged on 24 May 1816, at which time he was serving in Beckwith’s company and was described as being about 45 years of age and a reed maker by trade. A note written by his commanding officer, Colonel A. F. Barnard, stated, ‘I certify that John Smyth served with the 1st Bn. 95th rifle regt during the whole of the War in the Peninsula and at the battle of Waterloo and is deserving of the consideration of the board.’

A John Smyth, of the 95th, received the M.G.S. medal with 12 clasps, from Vimiera through to Toulouse, though it has not been proven whether it is the same man. Sold with copied discharge papers.
