A Mounted Silver Memento Concerning Major Charles Elmhirst Luard, Norfolk Regiment, comprising three piled flint lock muskets bound with a strip of silver wire and a silver plaque ‘Lieutenant Charles Elmhirst Luard DSO Obassa, Ashanti. 30th September 1900’ mounted on a small solid block of rosewood. Together with a large calibre lead shot. Sold together with details of Luard’s career. A main feature being his engagement with the Ashanti 30th September 1900, a fierce action in which Major Melliss won the VC and Lieut. Luard lost an eye. In the Great War while engaged in an attack near Missey-sur-Aisne (September 1914 Luard, a fellow officer and twenty five men got too far forward and were either captured or killed. Luard was initially posted as missing but the Times 8th March 1916 confirmed that he had been killed in action, very good condition £350-450
