Henry Arthur Phillips was born on 19 June 1856, and entered the Navy on 10 January 1870. He served as Lieutenant of Sphinx during the naval and military operations near Suakin in the Eastern Soudan (Egyptian Medal, Khedive’s Star); also during the naval and military operations in the Eastern Soudan at Suakin 1884-5 (Suakin clasp); also served with the Naval Brigade landed with the Army during the Burma Annexation War in 1885-7 (India Medal, Burma clasp). Commander of Sphinx December 1898 to January 1902. Landed an armed party from Sphinx in the Persian Gulf on 3rd March 1899, to protect British interests and property at Lingah, where a native revolt was subdued by a Persian force. Received the Coronation Medal, July 1902, whilst in command of Antelope. Retired on 22 August 1902, with rank of Captain.
