Oscar Stanley was born in Abingdon, Berkshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the Berkshire Militia, he attested for the Berkshire Regiment at Reading on 11 June 1880, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in Gibraltar, March 1881-July 1882; Malta, July 1882; Egypt, July-October 1882 and October 1884-May 1886, and Cyprus, June-July 1886. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1892, he was discharged on 12 January 1894. With copied service papers.
