Edward VII, Visit to Bad Ischl, 1907, a plated bronze medal by T. Szirmai, conjoined and uniformed busts of Franz Joseph I and Edward VII right, rev. seated female points at star, 61mm (W & E 4925.1; BHM 3946). Matt surface, good very fine but has been cleaned, rare £100-150

Edward VII first visited Ischl in 1905. The town adopted the name Bad Ischl in 1906 and the King visited again in 1907 and 1908, at which times he tried to prise the Emperor away from his alliance with Kaiser Wilhelm II. The vendor’s envelope states: ‘From the collection of Lord Hardinge of Penshurst, diplomat’, which infers that the medal might have been given to Hardinge when he was Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign Office, a post he took up in 1906. For another medal associated with Hardinge, see Lot 1350
