Daniel Knight/s was born in the Parish of St John’s, London, and attested for the 50th Foot in London on 16 May 1838, aged 23 years. He served in New South Wales for 1 year 5 months before going to India with the regiment. He was present with the 50th in the Gwalior campaign in 1843, and throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46. Promoted to Corporal in July 1843, he was reduced again to Private after being found drunk and absent in February 1844. He transferred to the 61st Foot on 15 December 1846 and served with the regiment in the Punjab campaign and at the siege of Delhi. He had been promoted once more to Corporal in September 1856 but was again reduced and imprisoned for 3 days during June 1857, although his papers give no reason, and finally discharged on 12 July 1859. At some point he must have lost his Sutlej medal, most likely during the Indian Mutiny, and received an official replacement under the terms of the then current regulations. Unusually this was named to his later regiment rather than the 50th with whom he earned the medal. Sold with copy discharge papers.
