Daniel Whalen was born in Montreal on 22 February 1886. An Electrician by occupation, he attested for overseas service with the Canadian Field Artillery in September 1914, and was awarded the M.M. for gallant deeds with the 7th Battery, C.F.A. (London Gazette 13 March 1918 refers), the recommendation stating:

‘On the 9 November 1917, when in action near St. Julien, their battery was under heavy shell fire during the time allotted for registration. All the personnel had been cleared from the position when this man volunteered to man the gun, and under most trying circumstances passed from gun to gun until registration was completed. His great disregard for personal danger and devotion to duty enabled the battery to be registered in time for our attack on the 10th November’.
