George Claxton came from Fencehouses, near Sunderland. A Miner by occupation, he enlisted on 2 September 1914. With the 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment he entered France on 13 July 1915. He suffered a gunshot wound to his knee, foot and chest on 3 August 1915 and after being admitted to No. 8 General Hospital, Rouen, he was invlaided to England. Making a recovery, he returned to France, serving with the 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, October 1915-October 1917. He was wounded during the attack on Contalmaison, 10 July 1916 - suffering a gunshot wound to his back and left knee. On 17 September 1917 he sustained a bruised shoulder caused by a bursting shell - likely during the battle of Menin Road, 20-25 September and was again invalided to England. He returned to France once more, February-April 1918. Wales was then sent out to North Russia, 15 October 1918-23 June 1919. Serving there with the 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. He was discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 1 August 1919.
