George Joseph Mant was born on 11 April 1804, son of Henry Mant, solicitor, of Bath. He was admitted onto the Bombay Establishment in 1819, becoming Lieutenant in November 1820; Captain, November 1831; Major, April 1848; Lieutenant-Colonel, June 1849; Hon. Colonel, November 1854. Colonel Mant commanded the 19th Bombay Infantry throughout the campaign in the Punjab, including the siege of Mooltan and battle of Goojerat. He retired in November 1853 and died on 12 July 1876.
