Thomas Nelson was born in Carlisle, Cumberland. A Driller by occupation, he attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle on 13 September 1892, aged 18 years, 6 months. With the Fusiliers he served in Gibraltar, October 1896-January 1898; Egypt and Sudan, January-October 1898; Crete, October 1898-March 1899; South Africa, September 1899-February 1900. Transferred to the Army Reserve in December 1902, he was discharged on 12 September 1904 having completed his period of service.
