William Howard Pickup was born in Coventry on 30 September 1884, the son of William James Pickup, M.D. William Howard Pickup studied medicine at Birmingham University. He joined the R.N.V.R. as a Surgeon Probationer in August 1914, being appointed to the hospital ship H.M.S. China. The Navy List for January 1915 lists him as a Surgeon Probationer on the torpedo boat H.M.S. Legion. Pickup was awarded the M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P. in 1915, after which he was appointed a Temporary Surgeon Lieutenant. His last seagoing appointment was as a Surgeon Lieutenant aboard the monitor H.M.S. Prince Rupert. Contracting influenza, he died of pneumonia at the Eston Hospital, Middlesborough on 27 November 1918, aged 34 years. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Nicholas, Radford, Coventry.
