William Henry Clay embarked on the SS Georgian on 7 September and landed at St Nazaire with the 2nd Battalion Notts and Derby Regiment on 10 September 1914. The battalion was immediately in action and made a successful counter attack at Troyen, losing 6 officers killed, 11 wounded and 46 other ranks killed. In October the battalion was hit by ‘Overwhelming numbers’ but held their ground. By the end of October, 710 other ranks had been killed, wounded or taken prisoner.

Private George Booth, like Clay above landed in France on 7 September 1914 and thus qualified for the 1914 Star. He was later taken prisoner.

Private Arthur Stevenson landed in France on 16 December 1915. He was later transferred to the Labour Corps.

John Harvey joined the 1/5th Notts & Derby Regiment and landed in France on 12 May 1915. He was in addition awarded the British War and Territorial War Service Medals.

Walter Noy joined the 15th Battalion Notts & Derby Regiment, which was raised by the Mayor of Nottingham in February 1915 and was known as the ‘Bantam Battalion’. He later transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment.
