Four: James H. Staig, Merchant Navy

1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Pacific Star, clasp, Burma; War Medal, all officially impressed (M.N. J. H. Staig) good very fine (4) £30-40

James Hutchinson Staig was born in Edinburgh on 6 May 1909, and joined the Merchant Navy in 1939. During the period December 1939 to June 1944, he served aboard the Port Alma, Port Fremantle, British Endurance, King Neptune, Bucklaw, and Hughli. He was discharged due to sickness in June 1944 and subsequently emigrated to South Africa. When he finally came to claim his medals in 1960, the British authorities requested him to claim them through the Union of South Africa War Records. Consequently he received officially impressed South African issues even though he had never served with South African forces during the war. Sold with copies of official correspondence and confirmation of WW2 service.
