Chaplain, seated figure of Science holding a metre rod, figures representing Europe, Asia and Africa above, reverse legend, 100mm (cf. Coll. R. Marx 180; cf. BDM I, 402; cf. Baudey/Bricher 1992, 3). Extremely fine, light patina, very rare; in original red fitted card box (£90-120)

The obverse is taken from Chaplain’s medal commemorating the Conférence du Metre, held in Paris in 1872; the original medal was issued in 1873 and the dies subsequently presented to the Monnaie in 1875
