Henry I (1100-1135), Penny, Full Face/Cross Fleury type, Oxford, Tovi, tov [—] oxenne, 0.92g/12h (cf. SCBI Ashmolean 219; N 866; S 1271). Chipped and slightly bent, otherwise good fine, the moneyer’s name not entirely clear but the mint signature fully legible, excessively rare £150-200

This appears to be only the second known specimen of a type 10 penny of Oxford. The Ashmolean coin is from different dies and, although unchipped, is in much inferior condition. Dr Martin Allen kindly supplied the following information: “This moneyer is recorded as Tovi at Christchurch in Henry I type 14, London and Winchester in type 15 and London in Stephen type 1. His name also appears in the 1129/30 Pipe Roll as Tovius the engineer, and it seems that he was employed on the king's service in various parts of the country"

There are two other known coins of the moneyer in this type, BM ex Lincoln hoard (CM 1973, 8-23, 90) and BM (CM 1982, 7-25, 1)
