Alfred James Madgin was born in Islington, Middlesex on 14 September 1882. Educated at Southend Technical School, he was an Architect and Surveyor by occupation. He served as a Trooper in the Essex Imperial Yeomanry, 1901-05. Madgin enlisted into the A.S.C. in December 1915 and was employed by the Barrack Construction Directorate of the War Office when he made application for a commission. A commission in the A.S.C. was granted in August 1917 and he was advanced to Lieutenant in February 1919. Posted to France in September 1917 but invalided to England during the following month; then posted to Salonika, November 1918-December 1920 - for which service he was awarded the Greek War Cross. Returning to England he was demobilised on 15 March 1920, relinquishing his commission, retaining the rank of Lieutenant (
London Gazette 13 May 1920).
