Arthur Tower was born on 15 April 1816, the fourth son of Christopher Thomas Tower of Weald Hall, Essex. Entering the Royal Navy and passing his examinations in July 1836, he served as Mate aboard H.M.S.
Ganges in the operations on and off the coast of Syria during 1840. He then served as Mate aboard the surveying vessel Beacon, being promoted to Lieutenant in November 1842. As an Additional Lieutenant he served in the Mediterranean on the Queen and Formidable, December 1842-April 1844 and later as a First Lieutenant on the Ringdove in the East Indies. He was promoted to Commander in July 1854 and retired in about 1865.
