Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 3 clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal (14088 Sq. S. Major R. J. Pringle, 47th Coy. 13th Imp. Yeo.) slight edge bruise, very fine £160-200

Robert John Pringle was born in Muirton, Haddington, New Brunswick. An Engineer by occupation, he attested for the 2nd Life Guards at London on 11 October 1877, aged 19 years. With them he served overseas in Cyprus, September-November 1882. Having gained the rank of Corporal of Horse, he was discharged at his own request on 31 December 1895. Pringle attested for the Imperial Yeomanry on 30 January 1900, aged 41 years and was immediately granted the rank of Squadron Sergeant-Major in the 47th (Lord Donoughmore’s) Company. He served in South Africa from 17 February 1900 and was taken prisoner at Lindley, 31 May 1900. He was one of the ‘special’ prisoners that was sent along with the officers to a prison camp at Barberton, being released in September 1900. Commissioned into the 32nd Battalion on 20 February 1902.
