Nigel Anthony Johnson was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire on 29 October 1961. Formerly employed as a Labourer in a biscuit factory, he enlisted into the Royal Navy on 27 February 1979, being ranked as a Junior Radio Operator. He was advanced to Radio Operator 2nd Class when at Mercury in April 1979 and to Radio Operator 1st Class when on Londonderry in February 1981. As such he served on the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Sir Bedivere, April-October 1982, seeing service in the Falklands War. The ship suffered slight damage on 24 May whilst lying in San Carlos Water, when an Argentine Skyhawk dropped a bomb that glanced off the vessel. Johnson continued to serve as a Radio Operator until his release on 25 May 1986.
