It is generally understood that 1839 proof sets, including the gold ‘Una and the lion’ five-pounds, could be ordered from the Royal Mint by collectors until at least the mid 1880s. This is a coin from a late-issue set with an 1839 reverse but from an obverse die that only came into use around 1880
