George III (1760-1820), 1788 Pattern by J.-P. Droz, in silver, crowned cypher within wreath, rev. Britannia seated left, edge grained, 2.54g/12h (ESC 1642; Selig 1230). Scratched in reverse field, otherwise good extremely fine, dark tone £200-250

Jean-Pierre Droz (1746-1823), an accomplished Swiss artist and engraver, worked briefly for the Monnaie in Paris in the mid 1780s. In 1786 he met Matthew Boulton there and the latter contracted him to come to England at a high salary and work at Soho. However Boulton found him “to be of a very troublesome disposition” and their association was relatively short-lived. He returned to France in the 1790s where he continued to work as an engraver
