Thomas Royal was severely wounded at Groenfontein, Transvaal, on 30 December 1901, while serving in the 2nd Dragoons.

Recalled on the outbreak of hostilities, he joined the 1st Dragoons and first entered the French theatre of war on 20 December 1914, although his
MIC entry reveals subsequent service in the Scottish Rifles.
