Naval General Service 1793-1840, 2 clasps, Algiers, Navarino (John Rowe) extremely fine £1000-1200

Ex Cheylesmore Collection 1930 and listed in his published catalogue of 1880.

John Rowe served as an Able Seaman aboard H.M.S.
Mutine at Algiers and aboard H.M.S. Talbot at Navarino. His name was in fact an alias for Jacob Eastrim, born at Gothland, Sweden in about 1790. He joined the Royal Navy in 1809 but in July 1815 was discharged from H.M.S. Tonnant, along with four other Scandinavians for being a ‘foreigner’. Thereafter he served under the alias John Rowe, eventually giving his place of birth as Milford, Pembrokeshire. Sold with further details. Two other men of this name received medals for Syria.
