Montserrat, ——— Quarter-Dollar, Spain, Charles III, 2 Réales (Head Pistareen), 1788m, Madrid, obv. countermarked with Montserrat design raised within a shaped indent, 5.68g/87.7 gr (cf. Prid. 3 [cf. Sale, lot 269]; KM. –). Coin fair, countermark fine, rare £250-300

Provenance: DNW Auction 45, 1 March 2000, lot 489.

This coin is unusual in that an official stamp has been countermarked on a pistareen rather than on a Spanish-American 2 réales. It is not unusual to find pistareens countermarked with contemporary forgery stamps
