Auction Catalogue
CELTIC COINS Early Uninscribed Coinage, Cantii, Cantii, Quarter-Stater, Trophy type, two groups lines radiating towards rim, otherwise plain, reverse trophy design, 1.1 gms (cf. CCB 145-147; S 47; BMC 437 ff.). About fine, reverse struck from a worn or damaged die, very rare (£50-60)
Van Arsdell comments “traditionally described as a British type; possibly, but unlikely a Gaulish import.” The lines on the otherwise plain obverse, which do not appear on coins published by Van Arsdell or Hobbs are difficult to explain.
