Alexander joined the Royal Marines as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1847. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1848; Captain in 1857; Lieutenant-Colonel in 1868; Brevet Colonel in 1872, and Honorary Major-General in 1874. During the Crimean War, Alexander served aboard H.M.S. Dauntless. He took part in the actions at Kertch and Kinburn and was wounded in the attack on the Russian forts at Sebastopol on 20 April 1855.
