John Joyner (Joiner prior to 1870) enlisted in the ranks of the 93rd circa 1842. He served throughout the Crimean Campaign of 1854-55, at the battles of the Alma and Balaklava, expedition to Kertch and Yenikale; siege and fall of Sebastopol, including the assaults of 18th June and 8th September 1855. He received the Crimean Medal and three clasps, the Turkish medal, and was commissioned Quarter Master in July 1855. He served with the 93rd throughout the Indian Mutiny, including the relief of Lucknow under Lord Clyde, defeat of the Gwalior Contingent at Cawnpore, and pursuit to Seraighat, the affair at Kalee Nuddee, siege of Lucknow, affair at Allengunge, battle of Bareilly, actions of Pusgaon, Russalpore and Mithewlie (Medal and two clasps). He became Paymaster in May 1863 and continued to serve in that capacity in the 93rd, becoming Paymaster and Major in May 1873. He transferred to the Army Pay Department in April 1878 and retired as Staff Paymaster and Hon. Lieutenant-Colonel on 15 October 1880.
