Ralph Cuthbert Grant Lyon was the son of Brigadier-General Ralph Edward Lyon, C.B., V.D., R.A. He was educated at Malvern College, 1904-09 and at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Lyon was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd South Midland Brigade, R.F.A.-T.F. on 10 November 1910 (Brigade commanded by his father) and promoted to Lieutenant on 1 November 1912. He was mobilised with his brigade in August 1914 and went to France in March 1915 as A.D.C. to the G.O.C., South Midland Division, T.F. Invalided to the U.K. in July 1915, he was promoted Captain during 1917-18 and was posted to G.H.Q. Ireland in 1919.
