Richard Lawrence Benton joined the Royal Artillery in September 1939 and served 218 days in the ranks. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in April 1940, Lieutenant in October 1941, and Captain in July 1946, whilst he was serving in Palestine. He was promoted to Major in April 1953 and appointed to the Army Mechanical Transport School in May 1955, before retiring in December of the same year. Major Benton was qualified as an Air Observation Pilot.
