Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, dated reverse, 4 clasps, Suakin 1884, El-Teb-Tamaai, The Nile 1884-85, Abu Klea (2235 Pte. J. Bolsley, 19th Hussars) some pitting from star, otherwise very fine £700-800

Private J. Bolsley/Bosley was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry at the battle of El-Teb, 29th February 1884. With the 10th Hussars, two squadrons of the 19th Hussars, under Lieutenant-Colonel Percy Barrow, charged a large body of Sudanese arabs on horses, on camels and on foot. Many of the latter, hiding in the scrub, hamstrung the British horses as they passed and attacked the fallen riders. Of all those who lost their horses, Colonel Barrow was the only one to escape alive, but he was badly wounded with a spear through his arm pinning it to his side. When Colonel Barrow fell, Quartermaster Sergeant William Marshall seized a loose horse, and was attempting to place him on it, when Private Bosley, to whom it belonged, and who had been thrown out of his saddle, came up on foot, and under a heavy fire supported his officer into the Infantry lines, assisted by Sergeant W. S. Fenton, while Marshall rejoined his troop. Marshall was awarded the Victoria Cross, while Bosley and Fenton each received the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
