Document of the South African Rebellion of 1914 interest, bearing at the top a shield and flags of the Orange Free State in watercolours and inscribed, ‘Der Herinnering nan de Rebellie 1914-1915’, with signatures below of the rebel prisoners of 1914-15 and some of the officers and warders guarding them at the Pretoria Central Prison, 706 x 547mm. (approx.), faded and stained, mounted on card, in turn held within an ornate but badly damaged wooden frame (no glass), document in fair condition, sold as found £200-300

The document bears approximately 65 signatures, amongst which is that of the former Boer General, Christian Rudolf de Wet, Minister of Agriculture, Orange River Colony, 1907-15, who was one of the leaders of the rebellion of 1914. He was defeated by General Botha at Mushroom Valley on 12 November 1914 and taken prisoner in December. For his part in the rebellion he was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and a fine of £2,000. He was released after one year after giving a written assurance that he would take no further part in politics. With photocopied details of De Wet and the rebellion. Not suitable for posting.
