John Boniface was born in Oving, Sussex in May 1855 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class in January 1873. Having then gained advancement to Petty Officer 1st Class in June 1881, and been awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal during the course of his time aboard the ironclad H.M.S. Lord Warden, he was invalided ashore in September 1887.
